Why does salt efflorescence form at the base of walls?

Salt efflorescence (also known as saltpetre) forms when salt-laden ground water rises inside the wall and evaporates at the surface. It is the most distinctive sign of rising damp. To solve it, the salt-contaminated plaster is stripped and HydroFix damp-proofing plaster is applied; once the plaster has dried (24–48 hours), the holes are drilled and DampStop is injected.
